When Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines on November 8, 2013, it was one of the strongest on record and the deadliest in 130 years. The town of Hernani in the province of Eastern Samar was a microcosm of the storms larger devastation. The three storm surges that came soon after midnight destroyed much of the town, impacting 90% of its population of 8,000 and killing 77 people.
